The book, in its early pages, reviews John Gerard's autobiography, detailing for the reader the story of the suffering he endured with a father who treated him with violence and cruelty, undermining his self-confidence, and a mother who was powerless except to encourage her son from time to time to ease his burdens from this matter.

Then, the author moves on to the jobs he worked, which are more than forty-five jobs, starting with shining shoes in the streets, selling newspapers to individuals in the streets, delivering orders to homes, cleaning calves on farms, and also working in factories, as well as working as a butler's assistant and a domestic servant.

He then explains that he was never resentful of all those simple jobs; rather, he credits them, saying, "I learned my first lesson in selling from shining shoes and trying to get an extra tip for what I did." The author also discusses another stage he went through, which was a problem because he fought with another young man over a trivial matter, and the case went to court, and he was imprisoned for several months.

Then came the stage of change in his life at the hands of a man who offered him a job in house building, and he worked for him for wages. Over time, he provided Gerard with a small house to live in.

Gradually, Gerard became the right-hand man of that very wealthy man, who taught him the second rules of buying and selling. Gerard learned the meaning of the word "commission" by buying some things, then selling them and profiting from them. That wealthy man owned a small company that carried out shipping and unloading activities for various companies.
