The novel follows the journey of a Palestinian family expelled by the occupation from their original homeland, Tantoura, only to be met by death and refugee camps, paralleling modern Palestinian and Arab history.
On the back cover of the novel are many intertwined names, the family tree of Ruqayya, as Ruqayya al-Tantouriya, a small girl of thirteen, recounts in a tender style all the events she experienced, starting with the period she lived with her family in the village of Tantoura before the massacre that bore the village's name took place in 1948. Then she moves through her stories and the story of her father and uncle, and the loss of her family in that massacre and over the course of six subsequent decades, we move with her between many countries, from Sidon to Beirut and Abu Dhabi, then Alexandria, then Sidon again and finally.
